Scholarship

What is it?

Italy offers a variety of university scholarships for domestic and international students, aiming to support academic excellence and financial need. These scholarships are available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and can be provided by the Italian government, universities, or private organizations.

  • Italian Government Scholarships: These are offered to foreign citizens and Italians living abroad. They cover tuition fees, health insurance, and a monthly allowance.
  • University Scholarships: Many Italian universities offer scholarships based on merit or need. Examples include the University of Bologna, Politecnico di Milano, and Sapienza University of Rome.
  • Regional Scholarships: Various Italian regions financially support students from low-income families. These typically cover tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses.
  • Private Scholarships: Organizations and foundations like the EDISU Piemonte and the Collegio Einaudi offer scholarships and grants to support students financially.

The scholarship amount varies depending on the student’s housing condition, whether—on-site, commuting, or off-site—and their economic condition. Obtaining the scholarship may also guarantee free access to the catering service and exemption or reimbursement of university enrollment fees.

How to apply?

To apply, students must submit academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, recommendation letters, and proof of financial status where applicable. Each scholarship has specific eligibility criteria and application deadlines.

Usually, the steps are:

  1. Research Scholarships: Identify scholarships offered by the Italian government, universities, regional authorities, or private organizations. Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria.
  2. Prepare Documents: Gather required documents, which commonly include:
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • A statement of purpose or motivation letter
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Proof of financial status (if applying for need-based scholarships)
  • A copy of your passport or ID
  1. Language Proficiency: If the program is in Italian, you may need to prove your proficiency in Italian (e.g., CILS, CELI certificates). For English programs, IELTS or TOEFL scores might be required.
  2. Online Application: Most scholarships have an online application portal. Create an account, complete the necessary details, and upload your documents.
  3. Submit Application: Ensure all information is accurate and complete before applying by the specified deadline.
  4. Follow-Up: After submission, monitor your application status and prepare for any additional steps, such as interviews or further documentation requests.

What requirements do i need to have?

To get a university scholarship in Italy, you typically need to meet the following requirements:

  • Academic Excellence: High academic performance, demonstrated by your grades and academic transcripts.
  • Language Proficiency: Proof of proficiency in the language of instruction (Italian or English). This may involve standardized tests like CILS/CELI for Italian or IELTS/TOEFL for English.
  • Admission to a Program: Acceptance or enrollment in an Italian university program, either undergraduate or postgraduate.
  • Financial Need: For need-based scholarships, you must provide documentation of your financial situation, such as family income statements or tax returns.
  • Personal Statements and Essays: A compelling statement of purpose or motivation letter explaining your goals, achievements, and why you deserve the scholarship.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Strong recommendation letters from teachers, professors, or employers attest to your abilities and character.
  • Additional Documents: A copy of your passport or ID, and sometimes a CV/resume and portfolio (for specific programs like art or design).
  • A definitive ISEE (Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente) is an economic indicator used in Italy to assess the financial situation of households applying for social benefits and public services, including university scholarships.

What is ISEE?

ISEE (Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente) is a means-testing tool used in Italy to evaluate the economic condition of households. It is commonly required for accessing social benefits, public services, and financial aid, including university scholarships.

The ISEE value is calculated based on several factors:

  • Income: Total income of all household members.
  • Assets: Movable (e.g., bank accounts, investments) and immovable assets (e.g., real estate).
  • Family Composition: Number of family members and their specific characteristics (e.g., presence of minors, disabled individuals).
  • Deductions: Specific deductions related to family expenses and particular situations (e.g., rent payments).

How to obtain it?

To obtain the ISEE certificate, you must provide financial documents and personal information through the INPS (National Institute of Social Security) portal or authorized centers like CAF (Centro di Assistenza Fiscale). The resulting ISEE value determines eligibility and the benefits or financial aid level you can receive.

You must complete the Dichiarazione Sostitutiva Unica (DSU), a document containing personal, income, and asset information necessary to describe the household’s economic situation. The DSU can be submitted at any time of the year. ISEE certifications issued in 2024 are valid until December 31, 2024.

Accomodation

To get free housing at a university campus in Italy, you typically need to follow these steps:

  • Research Available Options: Check if the university offers free or subsidized housing. Look into regional scholarships and benefits provided by organizations like EDISU Piemonte or the Collegio Einaudi.
  • Meet Eligibility Criteria: Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, which often include academic merit, financial need (demonstrated by an ISEE certificate), and enrollment in a full-time study program.
  • Prepare Necessary Documents: Gather required documents, including:

Academic transcripts

ISEE certificate

Proof of enrollment or admission letter

Personal identification (passport or ID)

Any other documents specified by the housing provider

  • Apply Online or Through University Services: Submit your application through the university’s student services portal or the designated platform for housing applications. Ensure all information is accurate and complete.
  • Adhere to Deadlines: Pay close attention to application deadlines. Only on-time applications are considered.
  • Follow-Up: After submission, track your application status. Be prepared for additional steps, such as interviews or providing further documentation if requested.
  • Accept Offer: If offered free housing, promptly accept and complete any necessary formalities to secure your accommodation.

Each university and housing program may have specific procedures, so it is essential to check the detailed requirements on the official university or housing service websites.

Campus life

Campus life in Italy offers students a vibrant and enriching experience, combining academic pursuits with social and cultural activities. Here are some aspects of campus life in Italy:

  1. Academic Environment: Italian universities provide a rigorous academic environment that emphasizes research, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning. Professors often encourage active participation and independent study.
  2. Student Organizations: Universities in Italy host a variety of student-led clubs and organizations covering diverse interests, including academic, cultural, sports, and social activities. Joining these groups is an excellent way to meet like-minded peers and engage in extracurricular pursuits.
  3. Cultural Events: Italy’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in campus life through art exhibitions, film screenings, music performances, and theater productions. Many universities organize cultural events, festivals, and workshops to celebrate Italian culture and foster international exchange.
  4. Sports and Recreation: Universities offer sports facilities and recreational activities for students to stay active and healthy. Depending on the campus’s amenities, you can participate in sports teams, fitness classes, intramural leagues, and outdoor adventures.
  5. Student Services: Student services offices provide support and resources to help students navigate academic and personal challenges. These services may include academic advising, counseling, career guidance, health services, and international student support.
  6. Social Life: Campus life in Italy is characterized by a lively social scene, with students gathering at cafes, piazzas, and student hangouts to socialize, study, or relax. Italian culture values socializing, forming meaningful connections, making meeting new people easy, and building friendships.

Mensa

In Italian universities, “mensa” typically refers to the university cafeteria or dining hall where students can have meals at subsidized rates or, in some cases, for free. Here’s how it generally works and how you might include it in your scholarship:

  1. Subsidized Meals: Most Italian universities operate mensa facilities that offer subsidized meals to students. These meals are often available at a reduced cost compared to regular restaurants or cafes. To access subsidized meals, students usually need to purchase a mensa card or meal plan, which provides them with a certain number of meals per week or semester at a discounted rate.
  2. Free Meals for Students in Need: Some universities provide free meals to students who demonstrate financial need. If you’re applying for a scholarship that includes provisions for living expenses or meal assistance, you may be eligible to receive free meals through the university’s mensa. This could involve demonstrating your financial need as part of the scholarship application process.
  3. Documentation: You may need documentation to support your financial situation when applying for a scholarship, including mensa benefits. This could include proof of income, family financial statements, or other documents demonstrating your need for meal assistance.
  4. Include it in Your Scholarship Application: If you’re applying for a scholarship and wish to include mensa benefits as part of your funding request, clearly articulate your need for meal assistance in your application materials. Explain how access to subsidized or free meals would contribute to your overall well-being and academic success.
